We are situated in the picturesque Overberg region on the southern Coast of South Africa.
Broad Valley farm is located in the Klein Rivier Valley (off of the R320) and while the vineyards take pride of place on the upper slopes of the farm, on the plains below the original homestead the family has planted five hectares of olive orchards to produce the unique Broad Valley Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
The Klein Rivier Valley (off of the R320) is 16km SW of Caledon, 20km NE of the R43 Hermanus / Hemel-en-Aarde junction. The Klein Rivier Valley runs West to East with the prevailing winds being directed by the valley sides, bringing a cooling maritime influence to the farm. The vineyards are North-facing at an approximate altitude of 260m above sea-level.
Directly South of the farm lies the Klein Rivier Mountains which rise sharply from the maritime plain of Hermanus to a maximum altitude of 964m. The Babylonstoren mountain range framing the North of the Valley, rises to a maximum height of 1167m. The soils are shale and sandstone dominated with clay substrata with depth levels of subsoils adding minerality and complexity.
The story of Broad Valley wines could come straight out of a wine-lover’s fairy tale. With corporate careers spanning 30 years, the Kretzmars decided it was time for a country getaway for family and friends, but they ended up doing much more than that! The couple restored a rundown farm in the Klein River Valley to its natural glory, rich with indigenous vegetation, and are now producing highly acclaimed wines and olive oil.
This careful attention to terroir and respect for the natural dynamics of the region are evident in their wines and the striking packaging of the new Broad Valley Extra Virgin Oil.
