COVID-19 Corona Virus South African Resource Portal

Simple. I'm a wine kinda guy ;)

During my 9 years involved in and around the South African wine industry I learned to appreciate, and view, wine from many different angles ...
- tasting wines for wine selections, wine clubs and generally trying to understand as many wine profiles as possible (while remaining somewhat compos mantis), which reminds me of a specific 9am tasting of a selection of 50+ wines for Virgin Wines in the UK...
- understanding wine from a winemaker's point of view when selling wine bottles to wineries, which brought on a special sense of pride when seeing wines bottled and displayed on shelf in bottles I'd supplied to the industry, specifically to smaller producers such a Marius Malan's Malanot range, and Hilko Hegewisch for Allee Bleue's infamous Cape Jazz Shiraz sparking wine...
- selling wines commercially into the retail environment via one of South Africa's largest wine and spirits distributors (Douglas Green Bellingham (Pty) Ltd.), which gave me invaluable insight into the supply chain from winery to retail, and everything in between.

With much of my time spent operating and managing a boutique online wine business, I learned to appreciate the enjoyment of searching for and supplying not only the great names in the wine industry such as Kevin Arnold's (Waterford Estate) Shiraz and Kanonkop's Pinotage, to wine lovers across the country (and world). What really excited me was finding little gems and knowing my most regular clients and their friends appreciated and enjoyed tasting these limited release or once-off labels as much as I loved finding and negotiating them. To be more specific Jan Boland Coetzee's once-off single-barrel 2004 Vriesenhof Estate Cabernet Franc was one of the most uniquely enjoyable wines tasted to-date, as well as a few regular limited release labels such as the Andreas Shiraz released annually in limited quantities and Uva Mira's Chardonnays in general.

For me, wine can be summarised into two categories of enjoyment. Firstly, it's a great conversation starter, bringing people together at braai's, dinners and occasions in general, from all walks of life, connected by a common interest. On the other hand, I love wine for its unique, artistic aura which changes with every vintage. My passion for wine piques when discussing what it involves to produce a top quality bottle of wine, essentially the art of wine-making itself.

I'm getting thirsty just typing this ...

Without further ado, I welcome you to join me in learning more about South African wines, cutting through the sales talk and provocative jargon, joining me sip-by-sip as we learn more about wine in a personal, almost one-on-one environment. This is how it has been done in small cellars since the beginning of wine-times, so let's continue the tradition and keep it personal and enjoyable. After all; wine is best enjoyed amongst friends.

Feel free to join my newsletter, or contact me with any questions about a particularly interesting bottle of wine you enjoyed last night. Either way, I look forward to sharing many moments with you in the days, months and hopefully years to come.
