The Strooidakkerk (Thatched Roof Church) was consecrated in 1805 in Paarl and is the oldest building still currently used for devotions by the Dutch Reformed Church in the country. In the vicarage garden is one hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon, the congregation prevailing on different local winemakers to vinify the grapes for them from year to year. Very little is known about the production of Strooidak. Being an ultimate vins de garage wine, one of South Africa's leading winemakers is producing it from a single vinyard of two ha on the Church property.
Oenology: After destemming and pressing, the wine is fermented for a few days in new barrels. The best batches were then selected to be put into French and American oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation took place. The wine was aged in these barrels for a further 18 months. Winemaker's Notes: This is a full-bodied wine with rich vanillin, raspberry, black cherry and hints of leather on the nose. It has very smooth tannins and lingers on the palate.
The 2015 is a charming wine with notes of cherries, plum and earth with an attractive herbal overlay. It’s medium bodied with fresh acidity and tannins which are soft in the best sense. It comes across as gently savoury and unforced. Food Suggestions: This wine will pair well with hearty meat dishes like Oxtail or Osso Buco. Also, try it with lamb chops rubbed with rosemary and toasted cumin accompanied by cauliflower mash and a red wine jus.
