ABOUT REIGERPARK:
Reigerpark is not just a place, it`s that feeling of being home. Reigerpark has birthed and raised notable individuals and housed many prominent figures, including Nelson Mandela, Chris Hani and the likes of Jonathan Butler and Pops Muhammed.

Reigerpark previously known as e`Julewe (in reference to the gold that was discovered in the area) was later renamed to Stirtonville (in honour of a Local Municipal Superindendent). It was established in the 1900`s after the Second World War, when people from various race, ethnic and religious backgrounds influxed from rural areas seeking work on the gold mines. The community also consisted of Chinese migrant workers and operated an Asian trading market known as Kalamazoo.

Stirtonville was surrounded by large farms, mainly Klipfontein in the north, Leeuwpoort in the south and Driefontein in the west. It was in the 1960`s, during the Group Areas Act, that Stirtonville was declared a sole residential area of the Coloured Community and renamed to Reigerpark.

With an appreciation of historical heritage, natural beauty, sustainability and human values, THOR maintains a strong focus on economic development and community-based tourism. We have established a network of local and informal businesses to ensure that visitors have an immersive township experience thus fueling the desire to experience more of the area.
